Traditional Arts Workshops 2012

 

We are pleased to be able to offer an exciting variety of workshops that range from

 traditional skills, to hand crafted items, and fine arts. We invite you to come to

Sycamore Shoals to learn a new skill or craft from our talented instructors!

 

Class sizes are limited, so please register early!

Watercolor Painting  - Florals                      Instructor: Barbara Jernigan

Learn and practice watercolor techniques and style.  Dress to take a short walk outdoors for photos and observations, weather permitting.

 

Making Fire with Flint & Steel                    Instructor: Bob Estep

Saturday, March 3                                          9 am – 4 pm

            Cost: $45.00                                        Min: 2              Max: 12

Participants will complete a flint & steel fire making kit complete with all the components for making fire.  Spalling flint, preparing various tinders, tins, techniques, and other topics relating to making fire with flint & steel will be discussed, in addition to demonstrations of other early fire making tools

           

Knitting a Hat in the Round                         Instructor:  Amy Gawthrop

Bring at least 2 skeins of worsted weight wool (about 200+ yards). Also bring a set of 5 size US#8 double point knitting needles,OR a size 8 circular needle (around 32 inches or more).  

 

Primitive Adhesives                                       Instructor: Ken Dykes

 Prehistoric man used a variety of natural adhesives for attaching knife blades and arrowheads, construction of tools, and many other purposes. Students will learn how to make and use Stone Age adhesives including birch tar, pine pitch, and hide glue (sinew). Materials will be provided.  Dress weather appropriate, class is outside.

Plying your yarn; ‘Z’ twist and ‘S’ twist, plying from a lazy kate, Navajo plying, and additional spinning instruction.

 

Storytelling-“Adventures in Storytelling – A One Day Youth Storytelling Camp”

Instructors:  Mary Jane Kennedy, Sherri Hyder, Chad Bogart

Sat., Mar 24                                                    9 am – 3 pm      

Cost:  $20.00 per child                                    Min:  8             Max:  20

Age limit:  8 – 12 years

This camp will – Sew the Seeds of Storytelling, Nurture the Imagination, and Share the Harvest of the Art of Storytelling. From 2 to 3pm there will be a program geared to the parents and siblings of the participants.  Bring a sack lunch and a sense of adventure.  No other materials needed.

Burnout Bowls                                              Instructor: Ken Dykes

Saturday, March 31                                        9:00- 5:00 pm

 Learn the process early man used to construct various bowls and utensils.  Students will make bowls out of tree burls using river cane and hot cinders. 

Materials will be provided.  Bring gloves and a good bush knife.  Dress weather appropriate, class is outside.
