Ranger Programs for July 27 - August 14

Seasonal Interpretive Rangers Chad Bogart and Sarah Redding with Jason Davis our very own Park Interpretive Specialist

The Historic John and Landon Carter Mansion, located on the Broad Street Extension in Elizabethton,

will be open Wednesday through Sunday for a tour at 2:00 pm, 

Ranger Programs and Park Admission are both FREE!

                                                                            

Traditional Arts Workshops are by registration only and must be pre-paid.

4:00 pm               Worst, Weft and Warp: 18th century Textiles Meet in front of the Fort for a hands on look at how fabric was made in the 18th century.  The making of fabric takes a long journey between field and family. 

 

Friday, July 29th  

2:00 pm               Carter Mansion Tour- Join us at the Carter Mansion, the oldest frame house in Tennessee, for a rare taste of elegance on the frontier. 

 

4:00 pm               Old Timey Games All ages are welcome to experience 18th century playtime.  Frontier families worked hard and played hard. Join in the games outside Fort Watauga. 

 

Saturday, July 30th

4:00 pm               Homespun: How to make yarn of your own- Join us outside the Tavern in Fort Watauga to learn how to make yarn the 18th century way.

8:00am till Noon Demonstrations at the fort- Includes sewing, spinning, inkle weaving, and

                                    basketry!  Come down to Fort Watauga and see them all!

11:00 am                 Flint Lock: A Revolutionary Musket “Shoulder your Fire Locks” with Sarah at Fort Watauga.  This will be a live flint lock musket demonstration.  Come prepared for history with a bang!

Saturday, August 6th

10:00am               Carter Mansion Celebration!  Take a trip back to the 1780s for a Frontier

                                     Celebration & enjoy a day at the Oldest Frame House in Tennessee. Visit the camps of

                                     the Washington County North Carolina Militia as they Muster on the Grounds of Colonel

                                     John Carter’s beautiful Plantation. Learn about Traditional Arts such as Natural Dyeing,

                                     Surveying, & Flint Knapping. Enjoy the Sounds of the Past with Traditional and

                                     Colonial music featuring our Fife and Drum Corps!  Be sure to bring the whole family

for a fun filled day!! Tours given throughout day, call for a schedule of times. 

 

Sunday, August 7th  

10:00am              Carter Mansion Celebration!  Celebration continues.  Be sure to pick up a schedule at Sycamore Shoals State Historic Area.

 Wednesday, August 10th  

9:00am                Yoga for Beginners ! – Start your day out right with Sarah and an early morning yoga session.  Be sure to bring a yoga mat with you to the Visitor’s Center where we will start our beginners

                                    lessons.  Yoga is a great way to stretch sore muscles after a morning walk!

10:00 am              Flutter-by Butterfly - Meet Sarah at the Visitor’s Center to embark on a journey to the land of plenty…at least for a butterfly.  Come and learn about the whisper-winged friends in your own backyard, as well as ways to attract them.

Saturday, August 13th 

10:00am              Critter Creek Walk - Meet Sarah at the Visitor’s Center Lobby to embark on a wet and wild adventure into the Watauga waterways.  Please where covered toe, covered heel shoes, and old clothes that you don’t mind getting wet and muddy.   Please bring your own towel.                                            

 

1:00 pm               Siege Scavenger Hunt – During the siege of Fort Watauga life was hard.  Meet Sarah at the fort ready to search for your survival on this scavenger hunt!  Winner will be awarded a special prize!!

 

2:00 pm               Carter Mansion Tour – Join us at the Carter Mansion, the oldest frame house in Tennessee, for a rare taste of elegance on the frontier. 

 

3:30 pm              Leaf Print Journals Out on the frontier it is important to know which plants are good and which ones are bad.  Join Sarah in the Visitor’s Center to make your very own journal of good

                                   trees! Please where old clothes that you don’t mind getting messy!
